The Open Directory Project has been very successful. I edit a few categories. It is now provides the directory content for many of the major portals. Yet at the same time, it has remained relatively unknown to the web community at large. For example, you'd think that someone at Mathsoft would be interested in maintaining the Mathcad category. Very few people realize how easy it is to directly control the content of so many important portals.
